15 Things Do This Christmas

Happy December!! This is my first Christmassy post, and I am VVVV excited about it. I just love this time of year so much and I am so excited to share all my Christmas themed posts on my blog. Today I wanted to start it all off by sharing a list of 15 things to do this Christmas and get us all in the Christmas spirit...

1. Have a Christmas Dinner Party
The best way to catch up with friends, host your own Christmas dinner party. If that feels like to much work, ask everyone to bring a dish and voilĂ , the easiest dinner party ever.
2. Decorate The Christmas Tree
Slightly obvious, but definitley take part of decorating your Christmas Tree. Pop a Christmas playlist on, drink some wine and have fun with it. It is one of my favourite parts of the run up to Christmas.
3. Bake Festive Treats
I love to bake so Christmas is the perfect opportunity to not only eat all the baked goods, but also make some yourself. From these gingerbread cookies, to christmas cake to chocolate brownies. Follow my Christmas pinterest board here for loads of baking inspo.
4. Have a Christmas Movie Day
Get some cosy pyjamma's, lots of snacks, copacious amounts of tea and spend the day watching Christmas movies. Some of my favourites include Elf, Bad Santa and The Holiday.
5. Start A New Christmas Tradition
There is always room to create new Christmas traditions each year. I would love to know what Christmas traditions you have with your family? One of mine is that we always get Christmas Eve presents, which gets us even more excited for the next day.
6. Make Homemade Christmas Cards
Have a crafts day making Christmas cards. Not only is it theraputic but you finally have use for all those Christmas cards you have been given over the years and kept in a drawer for no apparant reason other than the memes. Put them to good use and recycle them into something new.
7. Go Ice Skating
Not actually my favourite Christmas activity I have to say, but when I get going I do enjoy it. Sometimes the thought of it scares me a bit. But I never went at all last year and think it would be fun to go with friends this year. UPDATE: I went two weeks ago at Sommerset House and I actually loved it, I did at least 20 laps of the rink without holding on to my boyfriend for dear life = success!
8. Make A Gingerbread House
I have never made or even eaten a gingerbread house in my life, so this year I would love to make one, even if it is just putting one together and decorating it from a supermarket kit.
9. Go To The Theatre
It is the time of year to get yourself to the theatre for a jolly, festive pantomine. Oh No It's Not! ...Oh Yes It Is!... (Not even sorry).
10. Give To Charity
There are tons of ways you can give to Charity this Christmas, from food banks, charity boxes or even just giving a donation online. After all, it is the time of giving.
11. Wear A Christmas Jumper
The official Christmas jumper day this year is the 16th of December, so head to Primark quickly to pick up yours in preperation.
12. Make Mulled Wine
I am not personally a fan of mulled wine, but if you are and fancy trying to make your own, this BBC recipe here is super simple.
13. Make Your Own Wreath
Buy all the foliage and make your own wreath for your front door this christmas. Be creative, invite friends round and all do it together. Or buy one from Poundland for £4 like I'll be doing - no shame.
14. Go To A Christmas Market
I am sure every city has a Christmas market these days. London is full to the brim of them at the moment. Get yourself down to one for some festive food, drinks and unique gift idea's.
15. Finally, the most important one of all. Spend time with friends and family, because that is really what Christmas is all about

Will you be doing any of these this Christmas? Let me know below if you have any more suggestions for fun Christmassy Activities!

The Silk Number // Boohoo Dress Of The Month

The Silk Number // Boohoo Dress Of The Month - November // Lauren Rose Bell // London Fashion, Style & Lifestyle Blogger // AW16 TREND
Boohoo recently reached out to me and challenged me to style their 'Dress Of The Month'. I jumped at the challenge as I am a firm believer in always trying to step out of your comfort zone, find your inner confidence and push yourself into trying new things. In this case the challenge in hand was to style a dress that perhaps I would not normally have considered to choose.

This silk number arrived in the post last week and I have to say I loved the style. This victoriana style is very on trend right now for AW16. The lace details and silk texture give this classic style a revival and creates more of a gothic edge. We have seen the vampy inspiration for this trend on the AW16 catwalks this year with showcases from Marc Jacobs to Burberry to Valentino and this trend has now trickled down into mainstream fashion from these luxury brands.

This dress is a bargain at £20, and can be worn for a casual day look like I have styled here or a fancy evening look. It also is available in black, which I am tempted by. My idea behind styling this dress was to show the versatility of the piece. Not only can it be worn as a dress, but also how it can be used as the perfect layer in an outfit for this season. Throwing a cosy jumper over a dress transforms the look and creates the illusion that actually maaaybe I am wearing a skirt.

Layers are also essential right now since November has gotten so cold! I grabbed this grey coat out of my wardrobe that I have actually had for a few years now. It is one of those trusty staple pieces that I bring out every single winter. I love the mix of grey tones in this look, with the black pieces creating more of an edge to the outfit.

I think that these gorgeous high knee boots work perfectly with this dress and add a bit more glam points to the look. I actually picked these beauty's up in Primark at the weekend. Can you believe it? I am so happy that I found them and at a bargain price of just £22. Not only do they look great, but they actually do a good job in keeping my legs warm. They also allow me to secretly wear comfy, patterned knee-high socks underneath without anyone around me knowing.

I am actually quite proud of this look I have created and I think I successfully made this dress my own. I hope this has given you some inspiration to try and experiment a bit more with fashion. Leave your comfort zone, try pieces you wouldn't normally go for and push yourself to just have fun with it. Fashion should always be fun! This mantra can also be replicated in our own lives. There is always something new out there to try, whether it is fashion, a new food or even a new hobby. It can literally be anything. What have you always thought about doing, but never actually done. Just go and do it! After all, what is life without a challenge?

Boohoo have got so mant more amazing dresses in for AW16, have a quick browse here and start getting some inspiration for Christmas Party season - not long to go now!

I hope you are all having a fabulous week! Until next time, LR xx

The Cake Of Dreams

This cake is a bit of a showstopper in the words of Bake Off. Definitely the perfect cake for a birthday celebration.
It was my flatmates birthday, so I decided to go all out for her and make a cake of dreams. I opted for a three tier vanilla sponge cake with buttercream icing, and a pink white chocolate ganache drip and topped it off with white chocolate and raspberry rocky road, chocolate thins and marshmallows. I created the vision of what I wanted to make beforehand in my head and then adapted a number of different recipes to create what I wanted. So if you fancy a challenge and want to give this cake a go or you are just a bit nosey to see how I made it, here is the recipe...

First of all I started the process by making the base of the cake, the three vanilla sponges.

Three Tier Vanilla Sponge Recipe

  • Ingredients

    337g soft butter
    337g caster sugar
    6 medium eggs
    3 tsp vanilla extract
    337g self raising flour
    Splash of Milk

    Method

    1. Preheat the oven to 180°/350F/Gas 4.

    2. Grease three cake tins with butter and line with baking parchment if you have it. I only had two cake tins so I had to bake them in two batches.

    3. Cream the butter and sugar together in a bowl until fluffy. If your butter is too hard, melt in the microwave for 30 seconds to soften and it will make life so much easier.

    4. Next beat in the eggs and vanilla extract, before folding in the flour. Add a splash of milk and whisk until the batter is nice and smooth.

    6. Divide the mixture between the three cake tins and pop in the oven for 20-25 minutes.

    7. Remove from the oven when ready, leave to cool for five minutes before extracting the cakes from the tins to cool for longer.

Whilst the cake layers are cooling, move on to make the icing..

Buttercream Icing Recipe

Ingredients

150g butter
290g icing sugar
2 tbsp milk
1 drop of vanilla essence

Method

1. Beat the butter until soft

2. Slowly add the icing sugar into the butter and continuously mix until smooth. Be sure to add the milk as and when you need to, to create the right creamy consistancy

3. Add in the drop of vanilla essence before giving it a final mix to combine it

4. Make sure your cakes are now cool enough to add icing and begin to spread the icing onto each layer of the cake before sandwiching them together.

5. Use the rest of the icing to cover the top and sides of the cake

You can't actually see from the pictures, but I added a few drops of red food colouring to a third of the icing and made the middle layer have pink icing. That is just another extra option if you wish to do so.

Now for the best part, decorating the cake. I decided to go all out and make a white chocolate and raspberry rocky road to top with as well as getting creative by adding a bright pink drip around the cake.

White Chocolate Ganache Recipe

Ingredients

200ml White Chocolate - broken into pieces
200ml Double Cream
Red Food Colouring

Method

1. Gradually melt the white chocolate in the microwave on a low heat until smooth. I tend to put the bowl in for 30 seconds at a time to ensure it doesn't burn.

2. Slowly heat the double cream in a saucepan until it comes to the boil.

3. Take the pan off the heat and add in all of the white chocolate. Stir whilst the white chocolate melts into the cream and mix until combined.

3. Add a couple of drops of food colouring to start to build the colour. Keep adding until you have reached your desired shade of pink

4. Use a spoon to drip the mixture around the edge of the cake

Note: I found making ganache particular difficult to get right the first time. If you find that the mixture instantly hardens once you add the cream and chocolate together, try to put the pan back on a low heat and allow the mixture to keep melting. This process may take you a few goes. Also once the ganache is made, you actually don't need a lot of the mixture. A little goes a long way, so perhaps try to use only half of the ingredients at first.

Now lets see how to create the topping. Ideally you should make the rocky road at the start to give it time to set. I actually made mine the night before and kept it in the freezer until I needed to use it. I definitely made a lot of this recipe up as I went along, so feel free to add whatever else you wish into the mixture, biscuits, strawberries, anything you fancy.

White Chocolate and Raspberry Rocky Road Recipe

Ingredients

400g white chocolate
1 cup of marshmallows
1 cup raspberries
1/3 cup dried cranberries

Method

1. Line a 8x12 baking tin with baking parchment or foil.

2. Melt the chocolate in a bowl over a saucepan of simmering water. Be careful not to let the bottom of the bowl touch the water and cook until the chocolate is fully melted.

3. Once you have removed the chocolate from the heat, add the marshmallows, cranberries and raspberries and mix until the ingredients are all combined.

4. Pour the mixture into the baking tin and press down until the top is as smooth as possible.

5. Set aside until firm (around 2 hours in the freezer)

6. Once the rocky road is set, cut into pieces and add to the top of the cake.

I chose to put it around the edges of my cake and was still left with half a tin of rocky road, so I could have used the whole lot to cover the top but I chose to add lots of mini marshmallows and chocolate thins in the middle instead.

Not only did this cake look amazing, but it tasted amazing too and that is what really counts.

What do you think of this cake? Do you think you could give it a go?

Let me know if you have any questions because this cake really was a challenge but I loved making it. I also made up a lot of the recipe as I went along, so feel free to also do this. That is the funnest part of baking for me, adapting recipes to make them your own.
